    Description

    The item for sale is a hand carved alabaster statuette of a lion in a recumbent position probably around the turn of the twentieth century.  The lion was probably carved in Italy as this country is the source of most of this type of rock and home to carvers of this material.  The quality of the carving is high with good detail and lifelike form.  The mane is well textured.  The flat slab that the lion is recumbent upon has been repaired.  This is mostly visible from the bottom.  There is a small loss to the back of the tail near the slab as shown in photograph four.  The size is 4" x 2" x 2 1/4".
