Description
You are bidding on a hardback copy ofNaskapi: The Savage Hunters of the Labrador Peninsula
by Frank Speck. It was published in 1935 by the University of Oklahoma Press as a contribution to their The Civilization of the American Indian series and this is the rare first edition copy. The book measures 6.25 x 9.25-inches in size and contains 248 pages including footnotes, a glossary, and an index.
Anthropologist Frank Speck has been called a "nature mystic" and he held great respect for the spiritual traditions of the American Indians at a time when most anthropologists simply saw Indians as being superstitious. Consequently, this book is one of the most detailed accounts of the magical procedures that accompany any Indian hunt for game, including the rare divination technique of scapulimancy. Long out of print, this book has become quite scarce today and is rarely seen in such nice condition as this copy. A fascinating read!
