Description
You are bidding on a SUPERB and VERY RARE early variant of a WW2 Imperial Japanese Army / Navy Field Telephone! There are three types of Japanese field telephones known to exist. The standard telephone was the Type 92. However, this type is it's predecessor, being made very early (pre-war). It was brought back from WW2 by a US veteran, so I am not sure in what capacity it was used.
Made of a leather, bakelite, wood, steel, and aluminum, this phone is in VERY NICE used condition! Somewhat resembling the WW1 British Ericsson & Martins Trench/Field Telephones, the leather case features two compartments, and when opened reveals access to the main unit, the handset, the line connections, and extra ear piece (so two people can listen at the same time). Both the earphone and the microphone are together in a heavy aluminum and bakelite ear/mouthpiece, with a "push to talk" lever along one side of the assembly. There is some slight corrosion on the metal fittings due to moisture in storage, but it could easily be cleaned up. Mouthpiece has a flip-down cover, with Kanji markings stamped into the front.
The main unit features a button for signalling in morse-code on the top (can be accessed through the thin leather patch on the left, as well as a separate button on the side. There is a spot to fit the battery, as well as an external connector. It does not feature an internal generator. Various handwritten markings and factory stamps throughout. I had one of these variants many years ago, and that specific example was dated 1932...so I suspect this one is also early-war or pre-war.
The second earpiece plugs directly into the main set, and also is complete. The leather on the outer case has is still quite soft, with no breaks or damage. Brought back by a US veteran, it would make a PERFECT item for any collection or display!
