By 1942 the Japanese Army was already looking for ways to raise money to support the war effort. At about that time the military occupational government of Malaya came up with an idea:The Lottery!
The first tickets sold for .00 each and the winning numbers were drawn on Aug.10th,1942.The Lotteries
continued until the end of the war with a new series issued each month. The profits from the ticket sales
were purportedly used for"the aid of victims of the war" and for"building hygienic facilities".Winners of the
Lotteries were paid in increasingly worthless Japanese invasion money. The first series had instructions
printed in English and Malayan, beginning with tickets from the 3rd series instructions were in Japanese and
Malayan. The final series were Malayan only.Although the Lottery must have a money maker for the Japanese,
it seems that Malaya is the only occupied country in which it was used. The tickets are all in near-mint condition
except the 15th and 20th series which have small portions torn off.I got these tickets about 20 years ago from a
collector in Australia who picked them up at a coin auction in Singapore.
