Description
WWII Japanese Sniper Scope for the Arisaka Type 97 Kokura Arsenal Sniper RifleHere we have an Imperial Japanese Army 2.5x10° Sniper Scope for the Type 97 Kokura arsenal sniper rifle, w/case, sling.
This scope is a Tokyo Kogaku (Tokyo Optical) contract scope, scopes serial # is No.60 . This is an issued scope and was issued to rifle serial #1040.
So of the 8000 Kokura arsenal Type 97's made,
Tokyo Kogaku (Tokyo Optical)
provided 14.6% of the scopes for those rifles (per Banzai online). This scope was No.60 from Tokyo Koguka (Tokyo Optical) in there run of these scopes.
This is a 80-84 year old scope(1937-39 per nambuworld), likely a WWII GI take home, the scope is in great shape considering, it spent its first 5-7 years of life in the South Pacific, and its age. There are artifacts/debris when looking through the scope, common for scope of this nature (battle field pick up?), and age, see images. The reticle appears to be, a lightly etched range finding reticle, not sure of the subtensions, with an integrated quick detachable mount. The case is in great shape as well, with the shoulder sling intact.
The leather closure has succumbed to age. The wood spacer inside the case has fractured see images, and while the Japanese text on the rim of the case has faded it is still visible. Additionally there are 2 US Army patches that came with the scope and case, as you see them in the photos. They are an XVIII (
18th) Army Corps (blue dragon), and a 4th Infantry Division (4 Ivy leaf's). While these two patch were not seen in the pacific theater during WWII, I also can not verify the age and origin of the patches. This is how I got them and this is how I'll pass them along.
